HNR

The Medical Research Council – Human Nutrition Research (HNR) conducts nutrition research and surveillance to improve the health of the population with a focus on obesity and metabolic risk, musculoskeletal health, intestinal health and nutritional inequalities.

Syplex was appointed to work with HNR to review and redesign the IT infrastructure. Legacy systems were proving unreliable and difficult to manage.

Syplex designed and implemented a virtual infrastructure solution based around VMware Vsphere, Dell Equalogic storage area networks and a Cisco Catalyst switched network. Active directory was rationalized and upgraded to Windows Server 2008 R2 and Exchange 2010 deployed in a highly redundant configuration with support for remote mobile devices.

Following the successful upgrade of the core components, further projects have included a pilot deployment of Sharepoint, implementation of site wide secure wifi, application publishing using Windows RDS and a Windows 7 rollout using VMware View.

UCB

UCB, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, is a global biopharma company with a team of over 8500 talented employees, a strong market presence in more than 40 countries and numerous strategic partnerships across the industry.

Syplex has been providing IT services to UCB and its partner companies for more than 10 years. During that time they have been involved in projects providing technical consultancy on technologies such as Active Directory and Microsoft Exchange. Recently Syplex have been working with the UK office providing a range of services including Microsoft Lync end user training and rollout of Windows 7 to the UK work force. Syplex are also providing helpdesk support staff and application deployment consultancy.

Takeda

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited is Japan’s largest pharmaceutical company, and is the world-leader in oral diabetes medicines.

Takeda outsourced the IT support in Cambridge to Syplex during 2007. Since then Syplex have been working successfully with the team of approx. 120 mainly scientific staff split between two locations in Cambridge and a further site in Singapore. The Syplex team on site comprises of a Network Manager, helpdesk support administrator and part time support in the 2nd Cambridge location. During the life of the contract, Syplex has engaged with Takeda to migrate to a Microsoft Windows platform virtualized using Vmware ESX server and have recently migrated the storage to highly available Dell Equalogic SANs. Additional consultancy is also provided to supplement the onsite resource, recent example of this have included Sharepoint consultancy.

CCSS

Cambridge Centre for Sixth-form Studies (CCSS) is one of the UK’s leading independent sixth-form colleges, specialising in A-level and GCSE courses, and preparing students for entry into the best universities in the UK and abroad.

Syplex has been working with CCSS for a number of years, initially employed in a consultancy capacity to provide expert advice and guidance. Since 2010, CCSS outsourced the IT support function to Syplex who provide a helpdesk service on site supplemented with consultancy skills to deliver projects. In addition to providing the support function, recent projects have involved completing a migration to a fully virtualised VMware environment, upgrading to Windows Server 2008 R2, the deployment of Sharepoint and upgrade to Exchange 2010.

Syplex are currently engaged with CCSS to provide a trial of Microsoft Lync with a view to replacing the existing legacy phone system. They are also investigating the wider use of Video Conferencing.

Eastern Leadership Centre

Eastern Leadership Centre is a not-for-profit, charitable company. We support all aspects of educational leadership and learning in the Eastern region, through partnerships with headteachers, staff, governors of schools, children’s centres, local authorities and businesses.

Syplex were approached by ELC and asked to design a solution to replace the ageing hardware and also investigate ongoing problems with the Microsoft Exchange email system.

The email problems were quickly identified and resolved and Syplex proceeded with designing a solution. VMware Vsphere was demonstrated on evaluation licences and ELC were particularly pleased with the high availability the solution offered using a backup product called Veeam Backup and Replication. ELC sourced the hardware and Syplex worked with the IT Manager to implement the solution and migrate all live services with minimal interruption to the live environment. Training was provided and Syplex provide ongoing additional telephone support to provide advice when needed.

Ipex Capital Management

Ipex Capital is an independent, UK based venture capital company providing funding to early stage science and technology companies. Originally the venture capital arm of PA Consulting, it was spun out in June 2008 but continues to work closely with PA Consulting to develop the technology and markets for its early stage companies. It is the sole investor in its venture companies and maximises company value by providing proactive commercial, legal, and HR support for them all.

Amongst Ipex Capital’s venture companies is Aegate, a patient safety communications company. Established in 2004, the company’s business system combats pharmaceutical counterfeiting by the secure authentication of pharmaceuticals at the point of dispensing. It has operations in Belgium, Greece, Italy and Ireland (with plans in place for further growth across Europe in the next few years).

The technical solution specified by Syplex is based on server and network virtualisation (VMWare ESX server and Cisco network switches). Site to site VPNs were deployed, plus Riverbed “Steelhead” to achieve WAN acceleration. Riverbed Mobile controller and ActivIdentity two factor authentication is used by remote workers.
